Walk into the CICS Northtown Academy library on any given afternoon, and you’ll find more than just shelves lined with books. You’ll find students deep in discussion, debating the motives of literary characters, or lost in the pages of a novel they can’t put down. At the heart of it all is Jim Klise—a librarian, mentor, and champion of literacy who has dedicated over two decades to making reading an essential part of student life.

Since 2003, Jim has transformed the library into more than a study space—it’s a hub for learning, connection, and discovery. His book club, which he has missed only twice in 21 years, is a beloved tradition that fosters critical thinking and a love of reading. Beyond his daily work, he has tirelessly secured grants and funding to keep the library stocked with high-quality books and programs, ensuring students have the resources they need to thrive.

Fundraising for the Library

Maintaining a well-stocked, engaging library in a school with fluctuating budgets is no small feat. Jim has secured grants from numerous organizations, including the Laura Bush Library Foundation and the Illinois Arts Council, allowing him to enhance the library’s collection and fund special events.

One of his proudest achievements is launching the CICS Northtown Lit Fest, where students met published authors and explored fiction writing. “Meeting successful novelists in person can be life-changing,” he says. “I hope the event inspired future authors.”

Jim emphasizes the importance of continuous funding. “If we want students to be strong, confident readers, we need fresh books, research databases, and welcoming spaces—all of which require resources.”

The Library’s Impact at Northtown

The CICS Northtown Academy library is more than just reading materials —it’s a hub for creativity and academic growth. “The dynamic works because students feel free to express their opinions without consequence. They’re not being graded; they’re just sharing an experience.” This open environment fosters both confidence and curiosity.

Students also credit the book club with strengthening their academic and social skills. “The book club has improved my critical thinking skills and given me a community where I feel heard,” Caragh said, a sophomore at CICS Northtown. Ranya, a junior, added, “Before coming to Northtown, I didn’t like to read. Now, I have my own collection of books at home thanks to the club.”

Jim believes choice is key to nurturing a love for reading. “I fell in love with books because my mom let me pick whatever I wanted at the library. That’s all it took.”

Supporting Literacy Across CICS

Jim’s work reflects a broader commitment to literacy across the CICS network. Recently, CICS Loomis received a $10,000 donation to enhance its library, reinforcing the need for well-funded school libraries. Meanwhile, CICS Avalon, Basil, and Washington Park are seeing promising results from “gap-busting” reading initiatives, as highlighted by Stanford University.

“As students become stronger readers, every part of their education improves,” Jim says. “Libraries are places where curiosity leads to discovery.”

Jim Klise’s impact at CICS Northtown Academy goes beyond books—he has built a space where students feel inspired to read, think, and grow. But school libraries need ongoing support.

“We need to fund libraries, advocate for them, and support them at the local level,” Jim urges. “Parents, community members, and donors all have a role to play.” [Support our libraries here]

Investing in CICS school libraries means investing in students’ futures. Thanks to educators like Jim Klise, CICS students aren’t just learning to read—they’re learning to love reading.
