Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month: An Interview with CICS' Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Luis Sanchez

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we sat down with Luis Sanchez, the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at the Chicago International Charter School (CICS), to learn more about his journey, his passion for education, and why he's proud to be Latino.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your background and what led you to your current role as the Director of Communications and Public Affairs at CICS?

Luis: Certainly! I'm a proud native Chicagoan who spent over a decade working in the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. During that time, I had the privilege of serving in various roles in the U.S. Defense Department, including as a Presidential Management Fellow. My experiences in the public sector ignited my passion for policy and public service.

When I returned to Chicago, I was drawn to CICS because of its unwavering commitment to providing quality education, especially to Black and Brown communities. Education is a powerful force for positive change, and I wanted to be part of an organization that shares that belief and actively works towards achieving it.

Q: What aspects of your heritage and culture are you most proud of?

Luis: My Latino heritage has had a profound impact on my life. It's a culture rooted in strong values, family, and community. I'm proud of our rich traditions, our resilience, and the way we embrace diversity within our own culture. Being Latino means valuing inclusivity, which aligns perfectly with CICS' mission of providing quality education to all students, regardless of their background.

Q: How does your role at CICS allow you to make a positive impact, especially within the Latino community?

Luis: As the Director of Communications and Public Affairs, I have the privilege of shaping and sharing the narrative of CICS. It's an opportunity to amplify the voices of our students, families, and educators, particularly those from underrepresented communities.

I believe that by highlighting the incredible work CICS does in providing a world-class education, we're not only making a difference in the lives of our students but also setting an example for the broader education community. Representation matters, and I'm proud to be part of an organization that values diversity and inclusion.

Q: What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you, and how do you celebrate it?

Luis: Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the contributions of Latinos to American society. It's a celebration of our culture, our achievements, and our resilience. Personally, I take this time to connect with my roots, spend time with family, and share stories about our heritage. It's also an opportunity to educate others about the rich tapestry of Latino cultures and histories.

At CICS, we also make an effort to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the accomplishments of our Latino students, educators, and staff. It's a chance to foster understanding and appreciation for the diverse backgrounds that make up our CICS family.

Q: Lastly, what message would you like to convey to aspiring Latino professionals who aspire to make a positive impact on their communities, much like you have?

Luis: I would say, never underestimate the power of your heritage and the unique perspective it brings. Embrace your cultural identity and use it as a source of strength. Find opportunities where you can make a difference, and don't be afraid to pursue your passions.

Remember that the work you do can have a profound impact on the lives of others. Education is a transformative force, and by working together, we can create a brighter future for all, regardless of where we come from. Be proud of who you are, and always strive to uplift those around you.

Mientras celebramos el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, nos sentamos con Luis Sánchez, Director de Comunicaciones y Asuntos Públicos de Chicago International Charter School (CICS), para conocer más sobre su trayectoria, su pasión por la educación y por qué está orgulloso de ser latino. 

P: ¿Puede contarnos un poco sobre sus antecedentes y qué lo llevó a su puesto actual como Director de Comunicaciones y Asuntos Públicos en CICS?

Luis: ¡Claro! Soy un orgulloso nativo de Chicago que pasó más de una década trabajando en el gobierno de los EE. UU. en Washington, D.C. Durante ese tiempo, tuve el privilegio de desempeñar varios cargos en el Departamento de Defensa de los EE. UU., incluso como miembro de gestión presidencial. Mis experiencias en el sector público encendieron mi pasión por las políticas y el servicio público.

Cuando regresé a Chicago, me atrajo CICS por su compromiso inquebrantable de brindar educación de calidad, especialmente a las comunidades negras y latinas. La educación es una fuerza poderosa para el cambio positivo y quería ser parte de una organización que comparta esa creencia y trabaje activamente para lograrlo.

P: ¿De qué aspectos de su herencia y cultura está más orgulloso?

Luis: Mi herencia latina ha tenido un profundo impacto en mi vida. Es una cultura arraigada en valores sólidos, la familia y la comunidad. Estoy orgulloso de nuestras ricas tradiciones, nuestra resiliencia y la forma en que abrazamos la diversidad dentro de nuestra propia cultura. Ser latino significa valorar la inclusión, lo que se alinea perfectamente con la misión de CICS de brindar educación de calidad a todos los estudiantes, independientemente de su origen.

P: ¿Cómo le permite su papel en CICS generar un impacto positivo, especialmente dentro de la comunidad latina?

Luis: Como Director de Comunicaciones y Asuntos Públicos, tengo el privilegio de dar forma y compartir la narrativa de CICS. Es una oportunidad para amplificar las voces de nuestros estudiantes, familias y educadores, particularmente aquellos de comunidades subrepresentadas.

Es una celebración de nuestra cultura, nuestros logros y nuestra resiliencia. Personalmente, aprovecho este tiempo para conectarme con mis raíces, pasar tiempo con mi familia y compartir historias sobre nuestra herencia. También es una oportunidad para educar a otros sobre el rico entramado de culturas e historias latinas.

En CICS, también nos esforzamos por celebrar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana reconociendo los logros de nuestros estudiantes, educadores y personal latinos. Es una oportunidad para fomentar la comprensión y el aprecio por los diversos orígenes que conforman nuestra familia CICS.

P: Por último, ¿qué mensaje le gustaría transmitir a los aspirantes a profesionales latinos que aspiran a tener un impacto positivo en sus comunidades, como lo ha hecho usted?

Luis: Yo diría que nunca subestimes el poder de tu herencia y la perspectiva única que aporta. Abrace su identidad cultural y úsela como fuente de fortaleza. Encuentre oportunidades en las que pueda marcar la diferencia y no tenga miedo de dedicarse a sus pasiones.

Recuerde que el trabajo que realiza puede tener un profundo impacto en la vida de los demás. La educación es una fuerza transformadora y, trabajando juntos, podemos crear un futuro mejor para todos, independientemente de dónde venimos. Siéntete orgulloso de quién eres y esfuérzate siempre por elevar a quienes te rodean.
